Lentil Hummus For Chickpea Haters!

metabolic-cooking-recipesWho hasn’t tasted the delights of freshly made Hummus so far? There are precious little in spreads to be found across the world that can keep up with this food for Gods. And for those clueless people who have no idea what I am talking about, Hummus is a Middle Eastern/ Arabic food dip that dates back to medieval times. It looks like a batter made from cooked, mashed chickpeas and seasoned with the regular suspects of tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic.

My private belief is that once you have tasted Hummus in your life, you literally need to be a superhuman to stay away from it or not think about in any meal wherever there is any sort of bread involved. I personally cannot imagine my falafel or grilled chicken without a generous does of Hummus. Most Hummus enthusiasts also tend to keep a ready supply of Hummus available with every meal and develop paranoiac frenzies if they run low on supplies at mealtimes. However the world is filled with strange people and although Hummus can be a delightful accompaniment with almost any kind of bread, my little one does not like it because she is not too fond of the chickpeas component involved. We will give you a recipe for hummus, but one that is specially made for people who detest hummus or are allergic to them or even if you have plain and simple ran out of chickpeas in your stock and need to replace that particular ingredient in your Hummus recipe urgently as the case may be.

And with that we bring you today’s special recipe for the day – Lentil Hummus!

The taste of this particular Hummus will be somewhat different from normal Hummus as it sports an earthier taste and is slightly chewier. The best part about this recipe is that it can form a healthy snack alternative in just under 20 minutes!


o 1/2 cup uncooked lentils + 1 and 1/2 cup water
o 5 tablespoon lemon juice
o 1 garlic clove
o Coriander for seasoning
o 1 tablespoon tahini
o 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
o Salt to taste

Yield: 1 cup

  1. Pick out the pebbles from the lentils and rinse it thoroughly. Add water as directed in the ingredients and let it boil. Make sure the lentils do not stick to the pot. Keep the vessel covered and let it absorb water in low flame for about 15 minutes.
  2. Mince garlic in your food processor and subsequently add the softened lentils, along with all other ingredients. Put in a little water if necessary to get that smooth consistency.
  3. Add salt. Mix well and top it up with coriander leaves.

Pancake A La Newbie Cook

Pancakes are more or less a staple breakfast element in most types of cuisines. But this particular dish can be surprisingly difficult to handle for newbie cooks. If you are tired hunting for the perfect pancake recipe from scratch, is here to the rescue.

This delicious but simple staple breakfast item is a must on lazy weekends. But we have been so indulged in being served up this simple delicacy that most of us do not know how to make this the way our moms or grandmothers used to do. But for the modern chef who has very little time and no time at all for cooking hassles, we bring you the easy, instant way of making pancake recipe from scratch.


o 1 cup flour o 2 tbsps sugar o 1 cup non-skimmed milk o 1 egg o Small amount of baking powder (say, 2 teaspoons) o Salt to taste o 1 tbsp vegetable oil o 2 tbsps melted butter o Any sort of topping you might want to add. Traditional options include butter, honey, jams, maple syrup, powdered sugar, chocolate syrup, various types of preserves, whipped cream etc.


  1. Preheat the microwave oven to 200 Fahrenheit.
  2. Take a bowl and mix together flour, baking powder, sugar and salt.
  3. Now take a larger bowl and pour the milk into it. Add the melted butter and egg. Slowly put in the dry ingredients into the liquid ones and stir until everything is just mixed. Do not be afraid of the lumps and stir too much as that will result in the toughening of the mixture.
  4. Put a large skillet on medium flame. Put in a bit of cooking spray just enough to moisten the surface throughout.
  5. Start spooning a maximum of 2 to 3 tablespoons of the mixture onto the skillet. You can shape each pancake into a neat round shape using the back of the tablespoon. You can put in 2 or 3 at one go.
  6. Cook for a minute or two. The flat surface of the pancakes should start to have some bubbles by now. Take a thin wooden spatula and flip the pancakes carefully. Make sure that they are cooked enough to be able to bear the flipping without internal breakage. Repeat the procedure until the pancake is sufficiently browned on both sides. It should only take a minute or so.
  7. You should prepare a baking sheet beforehand or even have a heatproof platter handy in order to keep the prepared pancakes warm and soft. Transfer the cooked batches to the prepared baking sheet or platter and keep them covered loosely with cooking foil, so they stay soft and warm while the rest of the batches are being cooked.
  8. Repeat the process until you run out of batter. Serve them hot with your favorite toppings!
